When someone asks you to sing lines from Jagjit singh's ghazal, you are a little intimidated. That velvety deep voice, that clear enunciation, that soul touching music is not easy to reproduce. And that too for only 30 seconds. I sat down on my piano and started playing the song trying to see how it can be done. Slowly the intro forms into something that fits. Now its time to record the voice. I dread listening to what I would be recording. May be the audience would say who the hell is this guy polluting the the great voice. I record then listen, no I don't like it. I record again. then I do three takes back to back finally settling on the first take and there it is. Its not even close to the original but its my tribute to him. That must have played today in the auditorium with a hundred people watching. I'll know how it was soon...
